With a fresh new look, and an added touch of class, The Bear and Ragged Staff is more inviting than ever this summer. Whilst the character remains, the intermingling of stylish soft furnishings and the removal of blackboard menus has really given a restaurant feel to this popular dining pub.

Now printed and conveniently situated on the tables, the menus may have changed, but you can still expect to see the traditional and worldly favourites that this pub is famous for. There is also a daily specials selection, from which I chose the Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé. Simple in its presentation but packed full of flavour, this was a great way to start. Lara began with the Calamari, and enjoyed dipping those lightly battered squid rings into the accompanying tartare sauce.

Normally one for pies, I decided to try something totally different by choosing the Breast of Chicken for a main course. Poached in a grape and white wine sauce – and plenty of it – this demonstrated some of the softest and most palatable poultry I have ever eaten. Along with garlic roast new potatoes and fresh vegetables, this was completely satisfying in everything from the unique flavours to the generous portion size. Lara ordered the Goats Cheese Fritters, served on a bed of salad with new potatoes and a sweet chilli dip. Again, a sizable dish, this was in no uncertain terms ‘cheese paradise’ and perfected by the taste and texture of that golden batter.

I’ve had them here before, but couldn’t resist ordering them again, because let’s face it, the Profiteroles at The Bear and Ragged Staff are the best in Hampshire! If I had to recommend an alternative however, it might have been the cheese selection, which caught my attention with its local inclusions. Lara finished with a delightful Crème Brulee. The pub has been tastefully refined, but the character of the building and the cheerful banter of the friendly staff is certainly here to stay.
